The cases coming into the university help teach the students. These vets also do veterinary medical research for developing, testing and studying new medical and surgical treatments for animals. The veterinarians at a school of veterinary medicine generally have advanced degrees and training.

Laboratory Animal Veterinarians

These vets are also needed. Every research facility that has any type of animal, by law, must have a veterinarian, or lab vet, overseeing the animal. The laboratory veterinarian sees that the animals are properly and humanely cared for.

Some of the specialty areas include internal medicine, dermatology, surgery, radiology, neurology, oncology, dentistry, public health, laboratory animal medicine, ophthalmology and more. After completing their special training, they then take a special certification examination and become “board certified”.

Research – Comparative Medicine Veterinarian

Needles to say, the vast majority of human research in the human medical field starts by using an animal model. Many veterinarians are part of a medical human research team providing support, input, and direct participation in the research. New surgical procedures, biomedical devices, and of course pharmaceuticals are just three areas veterinarians can make a contribution to human medicine.
